Financial Literacy ProgramsPrograms in the Diamond Neigborhoods of San Diego
Mind Treasures began working with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (JCNI) in South East San Diego in April 2008. Through the generosity of many inidividuals and corporations, 12 children and Jr. Youth attended the first program at the Market Creek Plaza where they learned to develop their character traits and use them in their daily financial lives.
After completing the first class at JCNI (April 2008), Marquis Snowden, a 4th grade student, along with a few of his friends, decided to take philanthropic actions and raise funds to help with the purchase of a climbing wall for the kindergartners at his schools. In fall of 2009, when Marquis learned that due to drastic budget cuts at his school district, he was not going to be able to attend the 6th grade camp, he took on a new challenge to raise enough funds so every 6th grader in his school district can attend the 2010 summer camp. Please contact us if you would like to help Marquis reach this praiseworthy goal. In September 2009, Mind Treasures was selected by JCNI to provide a 1-hour financial literacy workshop for 112 students (K-6) at the Chollas-Mead elementary school in the Diamond Neighborhoods. Following the success of this pilot workshop, Prime Time Extended Day Program of San Diego Unified School District, requested a complete series of ABCs of Wealth workshops for a group of 5th graders at this school. These workshops were sponsored by a grant from the Legler Benbough Foundation and JCNI. Mind Treasures recently launched a program - San Diego NFL (Neighborhood Financial Literacy) - to provide financial education to over 1,000 residents of the Diamond Neighborhoods. This program is organized in cooperation with JCNI and Prime Time, and sponsored by the San Diego Neighborhood Funders. Weekly classes are held in various elementary and middle schools as well as community centers in the area. Current and past programs
